2016 Shaw Community Ministry College Scholarships

DEADLINE April 15, 2016

Shaw Community Ministry will award several $1,000 scholarships in the spring of 2016. This scholarship program was established in 1999 by Reverend LaVerne Gill in memory of her brother and was continued by Board leaders, Caryn McTighe Musil, Barbara McDowell and other Board members. The scholarship is designed to assist a young person in attending college or another accredited post-secondary school beginning in the fall of 2016.

Criteria for the scholarship: Applicants for the Shaw Community Ministry Scholarship must be high school seniors or the equivalent who have demonstrated promise of success in college or other post-secondary schooling. Academic promise may be demonstrated by a strong pattern of improving grades and academic effort, together with extracurricular activities that indicate involvement in community life through the arts, volunteer service, or other activities that contribute to the well-being of others; we request a 2.8 or better GPA.

Receiving the scholarship is contingent both upon earning a high school diploma and being accepted into a college or other accredited post-secondary school.

Applicants should be current residents of the Shaw neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC, 21 years of age or younger, and enrolled in or graduated from high school or an accredited GED study program.

Application procedures: All applicants must complete the Shaw application and send a college essay or English paper about themselves, two recommendations, and an official school transcript to the address below. Scholarship finalists will be invited for an interview on a weekend date in May. Scholarship recipients will be announced in June.
